Van Tattoos; Artist and Creator:

Van is quite the thoughtful artist. It seems that he has thought deeply, about every aspect of his tattooing. There is a sense about him, that he has carefully planned out and researched, what he wants to do with his tattooing. Yet he also speaks about it with a passion, that is the true hallmark of any good artist. You can clearly see both aspects, in his beautiful neo-traditional tattooing. Both the structure and careful composition, as well as the playful and passionate color scheme. Truly beautiful neo-traditional tattoos.

The Interview:

1. Where are you from? What age are you? and how long have you been tattooing for?

I was born in San Diego, CA but I mostly grew up in New Mexico and as of May 15, 2018 I have been tattooing professionally for 3 years.

2. The name of your current studio and where is it located?

You can find me at one of the two White Lotus Tattoo studios Located in Colorado, just south of Denver.

3. How would you describe your style of tattooing/the style of your tattoos?

I would say I do mostly illustrative/ Neotraditional style tattoos.

4. What is it you love about that style?

I love Neotraditional style tattoos because it has the framework of traditional tattooing which has proven to be an enduring art style for tattoos, In regards to how tattoos age overtime. Neotraditional also has more realistic elements as well, such as more realistic color blends and in my opinion more dynamic compositions, So Neotraditional appeals to both my desires to create a bold, techinal, lasting tattoos while also satisfying my want for detail, color and composition that realistic tattoos require.

5.What is your favourite thing about being a tattoo artist?

Getting to create everyday.

6. What got you into tattooing?

I Got my first “real” tattoo at 14 years old and I was mesmerized by the amount of preparation and work that went into the small tattoo I got. It made me appreciate how much effort went in to something that I though at the time was “simple”. I had always been into art, but my first tattoo gave me a new perspective on how I viewed art, I never knew how something so simple and small could be so significant to the person that wears it until I was able to experience it.

7. What inspires your tattoos(and art) the most?

I’m very inspired by nature and Folklore, as of right now I’m especially interested in Japanese folklore such as the different stories behind Yokai.

8. What is your favourite tattoo you have ever done or seen?

I don’t have a favorite tattoo I’ve done, as I’m still learning. I feel as though I’m far from where I want to be. As far as a favorite tattoo I’ve seen, there are far to many to name.

9. Do you have a dream tattoo, that you want to do on someone in the future?

I have a list of tattoos I’d like to do, one of them would be a back piece of a scene depicting the story on a half woman half spider Yokai named Juro-Gumo. I’d like to do a large tattoo of her as I enjoy the backstory of this particular spirit.

10. Do you have any future plans, you would like your fans and the readers at Mediazink, to know about?

My goal since an early age has always been just to tattoo, I don’t have any plans past that. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a long career.

Final Comment and Gallery:

Van is clearly an artist who researches his subject. As you can tell by the tattoo he described above, of the Juro-Gumo. We hope this lover of Japanese folklore gets to do a lot more pieces like that in the future. It must be incredible for his clients, to see the extent to which he researches and gets into the piece. We are sure he will go very far and as he dreams of, have a long career in tattooing.
