How long have you been tattooing and how did you start your tattooing journey?

Hi! My name is Maciej Sowa, also known as Enzo. I am coming from Poland. I am making tattoos for 14 years but my own adventure with that started much earlier. In fact, that’s can be boring. I saw my colleagues from school time were talking about their future and what are they up to do later. I must admit that, thing they were telling wasn’t any option for me, it was just boring. Waking up in the morning, going to work and repeat. I always wanted to be someone else, someone who in every day can discover new things, doing my job, but it was just my passion. I just tried to make some sings of my arts on another people that I will be proud of. Many years ago, on my life road I have met a teacher, which one pulls me on the good way for become an tattoo artist, and thank to him, right now I can tell you my story. If you are reading this, I am really, really grateful, because since you appeared, you breathed life into me. When I started helping in the studio I was still studying, and my friends were focused on going to parties. However, I preferred to walk to the studio after school and polish the drawing, talk with people and watch how it all arises. It was the time when tattoo in Poland was not so widespread but I saw potential in it. I was browsing magazines from England and Germany and I knew that we were just waiting for such a boom about tattoos that took place in the west of Europe.

Do you remember what was the first tattoo you did? If so, tell us what it was and for who.

Yes, I remember it perfectly, it was a funny situation. I always told myself “you have to start tattooing professionally”, you know, in the studio, with proper atmosphere, and so on. And I did my first one in the studio, almost professionally  – it was two in the morning in the artfusion studio. We sat down as usual, and I was talking while drinking a beer that I would finally like to start tattooing. Well, I made it to my homie, with whom I painted graffiti. It was name of the crew on the loins. In general I still have a lot of laugh from it, because in that time girls often had tribals in that particular place, hahahahah

Please, tell us about your current tattoo style and how it has changed over the years.

My works and style is the resultant of two different dimensions. First one is a stain that’s never be the same, but calmed and organized which gives strong shapes characteristic of my work, emphasizes or breaks the anatomy, depending on what it expects from it, while the complementary elements of this plame are motifs related to nature. Since forever I was in love with plants and animals, I was fascinated with everything that tried to escape from me. Nature is the best source of inspiration, I often try to use that. Moreover, sometimes I am using my own photo I have made of. I often go hiking to the forest, sometimes with my son who shares my passions related to animals. The fruits of these trips are often new inspirations for projects and photos of for example plants that later I am using to design new things. I fought with myself for a long time, I tried to connect different things with these stains. However, the combination of graphics and nature fits me the most.

Does anyone or anything inspire you?

The most inspiring for me is nature, also what surrounds us that means animals and plants. There are many interesting things that are still ahead of us to discover. Of course, there are many artists who have a great influence on me, but from the beginning of time, we have modeled on nature, we get from it the goods we need to live and we draw inspiration from it by creating things of everyday equipment, creating patterns on fabrics and obtaining colors. Equally inspiring is how nature can adapt to existing conditions, changing shape or color. I don’t think there is a better teacher than nature. She can be beautiful but also cruel, and our existence is closely related to her.

Are there any tattoo artists who are extremely admirable to you? If so who?

There are many brilliant artists, so it’s hard to close it in one artist. Definitely invariably for stubbornness and courage and consequences is Tofi, but I like different artists. It’s amazing how you discover new people over and over, not only when it comes to tattoos

Do you have any memorable tattoo story or a customer that has stuck with you through all the time you have been tattooing?

Haha great question, and I have one person like that. I remember that one day he came with father for his first tattoo. He was 17 then. From a teenager who wanted a tattoo and was listening to metal, he became a friend of the studio. You can always count on him. 10 years have passed as we know each. Big greetings Michał Zielonka 😀

Is there any art form that fascinates you also except tattooing? Maybe do you have any other passion or something that you really enjoy doing?

Oh, well, you opened a bottomless bag! With my son we are completely crazy with Lego blocks. Also I build my own custom insects and enclose them in frames just like the “regular” insects are prepared. Whole my family love to take care of animals, and recently everyone at home has been interested in exotic plants. I love to paint, I try to do something all the time and think creatively, I also play with a more spatial form of graffiti – I’m building my letters from styrodur. I style them depending on what effect I want to achieve. In general, I believe that every form of creativity influences who we are.

Do you like visiting or exhibiting at tattoo conventions? Would you recommend any of them?

Invariably for many years, the only undisputed queen of the convention for me is the Krakow Tattoofest. I have a lot of memories related to it. Also it is the only convention that I’m missing the most this year.  The weather there is always perfect! I like visiting new places, it is sometimes a challenge but also a pleasure to meet new people, taste delicious food and build friendships for years.

Any artist you planning to get tattooed by? Who has tattooed you already?

Answer: Surprisingly, I don’t have many tattoos on myself. I have several works by Tofi on me, one of the first Polish collaborations made by Tofi, Spajder and Prykas. I really wanted a sleeve from Karolina Wilczewska but I think I’m cracking, hahaha

What are your plans and dreams? If you think about yourself in 10 years, what do you see?

I hope that I will still be a proud father and husband, and that I will still have a lot of energy to create space around myself and my family. I think you will still be able to meet me at the conventions and working in the studio: D
