Willem Janssen;

Willem Janssen tattoos are probably some of the best ones, when it comes to mixing together new school and (neo-)traditional. He knows how to mix the best of both worlds using the heavy outlines and traditional tattoo images, together with the vibrant colors of new-school tattooing. With this mix, he creates his own very awesome and colorful neo-traditional tattoos. Every single eye has a sparkle to it and every jewel has a shine, he knows exactly what he is doing, and it is awesome.

The Interview:

1. Where are you from? What age are you? and how long have you been tattooing for?

I’m from the Netherlands, i’m 32 years old. I did my first tattoo in 2008 but i was still in university at the time, but from the last part of 2010 i started my apprenticeship and was quickly working full-time at the shop.

2. The name of your current studio and where is it located?

I work now at Vault 13 Tattoo Parlour in Venlo. It’s a small nice town on the German Border. It’s a big shop with multiple different things you can see and do.

3. How would you describe your style of tattooing/the style of your tattoos?

When i started drawing i drew pretty much anything, like any style, old school, new school, lettering and japanese but it always was in a certain way, it was just the way i drew it. It was a mix between Traditional and New School, years later the Neo-Traditional tattoos and influence came around the corner and it clicked with how i wanted my tattoos and designs to look. I feel like i always worked towards that point.

4. What is it you love about that style?

It contains everything i love about tattoos. The bold lines, bright colors and intricate designs with a lot of details. It’s a style that will age well i feel, and for a tattoo, that’s kind of the point. 😉

5. What is your favourite thing about being a tattoo artist?

The freedom, mainly. I get to work with my friends and do cool tattoos for my awesome clients, it’s great! I love doing conventions outside of the Netherlands, seeing different places and still make a living. It’s hard work but you get a lot in return, so it’s great!

6. What got you into tattooing?

I don’t know, i always knew that i wanted to do something creative, i’ve always been drawing, making music, playing around with different mediums for creating stuff. Then me and my twin-brother and another friend all wanted to get a tattoo. So we got one and we kinda got hooked right away. The idea grew to start drawing tattoos for people. That took off quicker that i thought it would be. Because the drawing went well after a while i decided to give tattooing a go. The tattooer where i got my tattoos from, was starting to learn us different things because we were coming over there a lot. He said i can tattoo my brother so i can learn to work with a machine and feel how it is to put ink in the skin. When i started coloring a piece he lined out, i fell in love with it. It was amazing. I knew then i was gonna do this for the rest of my life.

7. What inspires your tattoos(and art) the most?

It differs, i get inspiration from movies, music and art in general. But also my clients provide me with awesome ideas. Also looking at other tattooers is great! The level of quality out there is crazy.

8. What is your favourite tattoo you have ever done or seen?

Difficult question, i’m trying to make each new tattoo better then the last one, so i hope my favorite tattoo hasn’t been created yet!

9. Do you have a dream tattoo, that you want to do on someone in the future?

I love doing big work, like torsos and backpieces! I can throw in all sorts of crazy stuff and play around with composition.
So I don’t have one particular tattoo in mind but just the big stuff in general is what i love to do.

10. Do you have any future plans, you would like your fans and the readers at Mediazink, to know about?

Yes, i will be traveling to the USA at the end of this year and try to see if i can get some great work done there. I will be visiting my friends and collegeaus Manu Raccoon and Shawn van Oven, but also more places and friends hopefully. Should be great fun! Keep checking my instagram for updates!
