Travelling Tattoo Artists; Not Like It Used To Be:

Travelling tattoo artists are still a well known part of the tattoo community world wide. However, it is not in the same way as it used to be, at least not in all aspects. With the rise of legislation and laws regarding tattoos world wide, which has made the industry safer, it has also made it a little more difficult to travel as an artist. But it is not like it is impossible. We do still see virtual vagabond like tattoos artists, who live their lives on the road today.

But back in the day, travelling as an artist was both easier and harder. Almost like the life of a roaming cowboy, you lived day to day by the coin you could make and the kindness of strangers. Some would even have what could be called mobile studios. Some had studios like these in vans or mobile homes, one very peculiar example from Denmark had his travelling studio on a boat. But perhaps it is for the best that we don’t see these much anymore, though they were exciting they were hardly sanitary.

Some other artists might even travel around with circuses or other entertainment groups, others again sailed the seas with sailors and some even worked as sailors themselves etc. We do still see a lot of similarities with this today, with artists travelling around the world staying at different studios, some even travelling around on tour with bands and musicians. Though it may not be exactly the same, the adventurous side of tattooing is anything but dead it seems.
