Matt Curzon; Australian Legend/ Curzon Style Tattooing:

If you haven’t seen any of Matt Curzon’s work. You either have lived under a rock for the last few years, or you do not have any form of social media. In the world of tattooing, this guy is all over the place with his amazing style. He has truly taken neo-traditional tattooing, to a whole other level. His skill with color is incredible, to the point that you almost believe the tattoos will shine even in the dark. This Aussie is truly already a legend in the tattoo world, and he hasn’t even turned 30 yet.

A lot of people are quick to put him into the neo-traditonal catergory. We are guilty of that too. But you clearly understand why that may not fit, when you see his work. It is like he mixed all the best, of all colorful tattoo styles and made it his own. It is truly just his style.

The Interview:

1.Where are you from? What age are you? and how long have you been tattooing for?

I’m originally from a small town called Millgrove, deep in the Yarra Valley about 2 hours east of Melbourne, Australia. I’m 29 and Ive been tattooing for about 8 years.

2. The name of your current studio and where is it located?

My studio is called Empire and is located in Prahran, Melbourne.

3. How would you describe your style of tattooing/the style of your tattoos?

I described my style just as colour tattoos, really. Other people call it new traditional, neo traditional or whatever and I guess I fit into that category, although that’s probably more of a coincidence than anything.

4. What is it you love about that style?

That’s just how I draw and what I get asked to do. It’s certainly what I do best, but it’s not necessarily my target to fit into any particular style other than ‘tattoos using colour.’

5. What is your favorite thing about being a tattoo artist?

The lifestyle, for sure. I get to work for myself, hang out with rad people in a cool environment and have perks such as traveling the world to benefit my occupation. There’s not much about the tattoo lifestyle that I don’t enjoy, and I’m always focussed on making the most of that.

6. What got you into tattooing?

Just by getting tattooed. Going back my interest was most likely influenced by the heavy music scene and alternative culture, but once I started getting tattooed I realised that everything about tattooing suited me to the ground so I busted my balls to make it happen.

7. What inspires your tattoos(and art) the most?

I don’t know? I don’t think about it that much. Maybe my clients and their cool ideas, or openness for me to get creative. I get ideas from everywhere and keep a list whenever something pops into my head of a new idea to try, or element to include, or subject to tackle so I’m never lost for inspiration when the time comes to draw.

8. What is your favorite tattoo you have ever done or seen?

I’m not sure what’s my favourite I’ve ever seen, but my favourite I’ve ever done is nearly always my most recent.

9. Do you have a dream tattoo, that you want to do on someone in the future?

Not really, I just have to keep an eye on that list I mentioned before and see what inspires me when I get into design mode. Something usually jumps off the page for me.

10. Do you have any future plans, you would like your fans and the readers at Mediazink, to know about?

Just to ease up on the travel ever so slightly, and knuckle down on doing regular bigger pieces at Empire. I have a bunch of free reign stuff coming up that I can’t wait to tackle. Aside from that I’ll still be seeing everyone at regular conventions around the world in the near future, so keep an eye out!

Final Comment and Gallery:

Matt Curzon, if you weren’t already a fan, you must be it after seeing his work and hearing about what an awesome guy he is. But keep in mind, he loves color, and though we may be quick to put him into the category of neo-traditional. You quickly understand why he doesn’t feel he fits any. He is just amazing with colorful tattoos.
Other than that, this Aussie seems to be a down to earth dude, who just loves being his own boss and travelling the world. Meeting new people and living life to the fullest, while living through his art.

If you are not already watching out for Matt, you are truly missing out. We can’t wait to see the awesome tattoos he is going to create in the future. We have no doubt he is going to keep enjoying the tattoo lifestyle and creating some beautiful master pieces.
