…And it is All About Tattoos:

London Tattoo, is a book that like it’s title teases, is focused on London and Tattoos. However, it is not just another self-help book, it does not try to advice people on how to get a good tattoo or where, it is not a map of where the good artists are and it is not full of reviews.

Instead what the author Alex McNaughton made the focus of this book, is showing the diversity among tattooed people in one of the most diverse cities in the world. It let’s the people who have participated in the book, tell there stories. Stories about what they do for a living, how they feel about their work and how they got into tattoos.

But it does not stop there. It goes a step further, with a brilliant gimmick that is the main attraction of the book.
It shows a picture series of the individuals in question. The very first picture is of them in what they would wear to work. Next to this is their written stories. Then it is followed by a photo series of their tattoo collections.

Trying to Move Stigmas:

It is very quickly clear what London Tattoo tries to do. It tries to move and shatter prejudices and stigmas, regarding tattoos and the individuals who wear them. The sheer diversity of people that Alex managed to get to participate in the book, is astonishing by itself. But that he then got these people to both tell their stories, as well as participate with both their body and face on display, is what sells the book.

Everybody is telling their story, both with their body and with their voice. Standing by it with their face, fully recognizable. Everyone from a London club DJ, to a lecturer at an esteemed college, has been a part of the book.
It is amazing and should show anyone, that tattoos are not just for the deviant, delinquent or anti-social. It is an art-form for everyone, used by many as a means of self expression.

Final Comments and Book Details:

London Tattoo is highly recommended, for everyone. Whether you are a collector who just want to see interesting people and their awesome tattoo collections or an artist looking for inspiration or more knowledge about clients.
But it is especially great, for the outsiders, who seek to become more enlightened, about the culture of tattoos.

The book is not too readily available outside of the UK, but it should be easy enough to get from Amazon and the like. It was published in 2011, by Prestel and Written by Alex McNaughton.
