Kara Kastanada; From Scotland to Sweden, With Great Skill:

We had the joy of meeting the lovely and bubbly Kara Kastanada, at this years Scottish Tattoo Convention. She is one quirky and very talented artists, that has taken her quirky personality and poured it into her tattooing. Creating her own cool and cute style of neo-traditional, that has taken her from her home of Scotland, all the way to Stockholm Sweden, as of the end of last year.Well no matter where she calls home for now, Kara is one skilled artist.

The Interview:

1. Where are you from? What age are you? and how long have you been tattooing for?

I’m from a wee village at the bottom of a Glen in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. I am 30 years old. I think I started tattooing around 4 years ago, I’ve always been really bad with dates so thankfully Facebook’s ‘on this day’ keeps me right.

2. The name of your current studio and where is it located?

Just towards the end of Last year I moved to Swahili Bob’s Tattoo, it’s on the island of Södermalm in fairly central Stockholm.

3. How would you describe your style of tattooing/the style of your tattoos?

Cute, colourful and geeky Neotrad.

4. What is it you love about that style?

I love tattoos that make you giggle while doing them. Also being a big dweeb I get to have lots of geeky chat with a lot of my customers, they’re the best!

5. What is your favorite thing about being a tattoo artist?

When you have a super happy customer, who tells you how much they love their tattoo. We are fragile creatures haha, we need constant reassurance. I also really love that I get to draw for a living, not many people who did art in school get to say that.

6. What got you into tattooing?

I already did art, it was my ‘best’ subject, mostly because it’s the only one I bothered to turn up for. When I got my first tattoo at 18 I was getting ready to study Illustration at college and I had a lightbulb moment. My first tattoo was by Jason Corbett and he was super encouraging when I asked him how the hell to become a tattoo artist. From that point on I knew that what I needed to find was an apprenticeship. I got a job working on reception for a studio in Edinburgh and through that got to know the man who would become my mentor, James Aitken, got really lucky with my mentor, I love Jim and he’s always there when I need advice or a kick in the ass. I started my apprenticeship with Jim and the rest of the crew at FHT Bathgate.

7. What inspires your tattoos(and art) the most?

Lots of things, all the things! Nature, politics, geeky fandoms, everything that makes me passionate.

8. What is your favorite tattoo you have ever done or seen?

It’s impossible to pick a favourite, done or seen. I have artists that I long to be tattooed by/absorb their magical tattooing powers. Some favourites are Jess White (@jawtattoos), Sadee Glover (@sadee_glover), Ebony Mellowship (@ebony_mellowship), Debora Cherrys (@deboracherrys) and Mitchell Allenden (@sneakymitch).

9. Do you have a dream tattoo, that you want to do on someone in the future?

This changes all the time, depends on what I’m watching/listening to. I love my podcasts, so something My Favourite Murder related would be super fun.

10. Do you have any future plans, you would like your fans and the readers at Mediazink, to know about?

Fans? I’d say I prefer the term follower but that sounds a bit like I’m a cult leader. Mostly to anyone interested I plan on doing a little bit travelling and tattooing in the next year so keep an eye on my instagram for any dates!
