“Hanging the human body from (or partially from) hooks pierced through the flesh in various places around the body.”
It is a form of body modification which includes the following:
- Sub dermal Implantation
- Nipple and tongue splitting
- Body Branding
- Ear Shaping
- Breast Implantation
- Body Building
Now the given modification terms might make one feel highly terrified of the whole act but remember that the pain is always followed by a much higher degree of pleasure. If it was not for pain we might never have been able to know the truest meaning and feeling of pleasure itself.
Suspension.org states that:
-“There are many different reasons to suspend, from pure adrenaline or endorphin rush, to conquering ones fears, to trying to reach a new level of spiritual consciousness and everything in between. In general, people suspend to attain some sort of experience”-
Some people who invest themselves into suspension wish to have a better intrapersonal intelligence. Such people seek various opportunities just to have a deeper sense of them. Some wish to challenge the believed notions along with the pre-determined beliefs in order to challenge the system which according to them might be false. Some are trying to find a right path to step on and have one or more spiritual encounters while some wish to overcome their fears of not being complete or whole within their body. Some wish to find means of controlling their bodies in a deeper manner while some have the yearning to show that they are much more than bones and flesh. The rest who go into suspension just wish to explore the unknowns due to their adventure loving souls.
We always marvel and appreciate the acrobats performing dangerous act at a circus. We applaud the people who swallow flaming swords or contort or dance over our heads suspended via their hairs. So who are we to think that suspensions are different than that? Would it not be a form of hypocrisy from our side? Is it because the suspension artists pierce themselves with multiple gauges and use quite pointy and sharp edged hooks? Or are we unable to understand the fact that it too is a performance of art at a more personal level? We need to grow out of such hypocrisy and accept the world for what it is. We should not nullify something just because someone else said so or because the people who perform it are covered in tattoos and are thus “fringe” people.
Just so you know, there is actually a Church of Body Modification which states that their sole purpose is to educate, inspire, share ideas and help each other achieve their dreams.
Their exact words are:
-“We assert and protect our rights to modify our bodies and to practice our rituals..We believe our bodies belong only to ourselves and are a whole and integrated entity: mind, body, and soul. We maintain we have the right to alter them for spiritual and other reasons. The Church of Body Modification promotes affirmation and growth of a more expansive perspective of our physical and spiritual being.”-
Tersia Green, Ph.D, an author and journalist, applies the term “modern primitivism” to depict the art of suspension which leads back to ancient societies and cultures which included tattooing, piercing and every other act included in suspension. Tersia states that these modifications are used for many purposes such as “a visible sign of a rite of passage, protection from evil medical therapy, marking prisoners, showing allegiance, frightening enemies, creating sex appeal, displaying status and wealth, and even gaining entrance to the afterlife.”
