Fabrizio Demartis; Lover of the Dark:
Fabrizio Demartis, with a long career with both art and tattooing already, he knows his way around a tattoo machine and the human canvas. However, his one of his true loves lies in the dark. He loves the shadows and the darkness, the contrasts and the shading in a drawing. A love that comes to true fruition in his work as a tattoo artist. Creating truly beautiful, dark realistic style tattoos that catch the eye.
1: Where are you from? What age are you? and how long have you been tattooing for?
I’m from Sardinia, the island in south of Italy where I live since when I was born, 38 years ago.
I started tattooing in 2003 after years of passion for drawing and painting.
2: The name of your current studio and where is it located?
I opened my tattoo studio “Black Art Tattoo” in 2006 in Macomer, a very small city in the centre on Sardinia.
3: How would you describe your style of tattooing/the style of your tattoos?
As you can see in my works there is a dark fil rouge, even in normal drawing I try to put my creativity with shadows and contrasts.
4: What is it you love about that style?
I like dark style because it comes out easily when I start drawing but I also appreciate to experiment other styles under my customization.
5: What is your favourite thing about being a tattoo artist?
I love tattooing because I like the idea of leaving my mark on the skin of thousand of people trusting me. I’m also motivated to do everyday better ’cause the tattoo market is becoming ever huge and there is a strong competitivity but also great colleagues with whom confront and exchange good advices.
6: What got you into tattooing?
I draw and play music since I was a child and my desire to become an artist grew with me, but the tendency to draw and painting gave me immediately more good feedback so I took the path of tattooing.
7: What inspires your tattoos(and art) the most?
I take inspiration from the world around me but I propose it in my personal view. Also big artists like painters, singers, writers and tattoo artist give me inspiration, but never make a copy.
8: What is your favourite tattoo you have ever done or seen?
Is very difficult to choose a particular tattoo that I love, but one that I fixed in my mind is Christ’s crucifixion in a back made by the great Paul Booth although my preference is still to the style of Robert Hernandez, a very big tattoo artist and a nice person to talk to.
9: Do you have a dream tattoo, that you want to do on someone in the future?
I don’t have a favourite tattoo but my dream is to have more people asking me to tattoo only my draws and make it on very white skins, because the clear skin is the better canvas to tattoo.
10: Do you have any future plans, you would like your fans and the readers at Mediazink, to know about?
I plan to do more guests and tattoo conventions next year, also abroad, especially in Germany, and make experience with seminars and collaborations with others artists like the one I will do in Venice this October.
Final Comment and Gallery:
Fabrizio Demartis lover of the dark and truly a great artist, as well as a tattoo artist. It is refreshing to see an artist with such a humble dream as Fabrizio, wanting people to request his own art on their skin. The greatest honor for every tattoo artist out there. We are more than certain with the skill of Fabrizio, that he will achieve this dream of his. We can’t wait to see what he gets up to in the future.
