Embracing the grotesque by Joe Fenton

Joe Fenton is a British artist, designer, sculptor and illustrator, who mainly works in monochrome using graphite, ink, acrylics, oils on paper, canvas, and other. His lavishly scaled, surrealist drawings are produced almost exclusively in graphite on paper, and inhabit a world populated by humorous and grotesque Hieronymus Bosch-like figures. With a giant eye for darkness and detail, Joe’s work embraces the strange tensions between life and death.

Joe’s art work is influenced by many of the early surrealists. Embracing the grotesque by his employment of Hieronymus Bosch like figures that are gangly, writhing and cramped. Joe also uses motifs that suggest Eastern philosophy and Middle Eastern architecture whilst maintaining a feel for European Baroque and Rococo with complex frame ornamentation and plant like details.

Mediazink had the pleasure to meet Joe Fenton at this years London Tattoo Convention.

‘Eternal’, the finished piece, will be on display in a group art show called ‘In Service of Monsters’ as a tribute to the filmography of Guillermo Del Toro curated by Chogrin and Gary Deocampo at Gallery 1988 (West) in Los Angeles, CA. USA (www.nineteeneightyeight.com). Dates: Sept 11, 2015 – Oct 3rd, 2015. This piece was inspired by Guillermo Del Toro’s first film ‘Cronos’. A special thanks to Peter Gabriel for letting me use ‘With this love (Choir)’ from the album ‘Passion’.

Joe Fenton was one of the Great artists who had an exhibition at this years London Tattoo Convention.
Truely a visit worth.
